Depatment of General Surgery was started in 1963 under the leadership of Dr.N.S.Murali, a well-known General & Podiatric surgeon, saved many Diabetic foot requiring amputation. This was possible with the wonderful diabetic control by th Diabetologist Dr. CV Krishnamurthy As the department attracted more patients Dr.Jacob and Dr.B.S.Ramakrishnan joined the department.

The Department of General Surgery: has grown over 45 plus years into one of the most preferred destination due its expertise and pricing in Chennai. Many people from other states also avail the surgical services @ VHS.

The Surgical department has 30 beds in the General ward, Pvt. Rooms and ICU back up. About 60 patients are seen daily as OP. About 75 patients are operated every month. Many high end complex general surgeries including Laparoscopic procedures done at VHS are Head and neck, Thyroid, Parotid, neck node, Oropharyngeal Carcinomas, Vascular, Plastic, Urological, Breast, Gastro intestinal surgeries like Appendicectomy, Laparotomies, Whipples , Gastrectomies, Surgeries for Obstruction and Perforation, Feeding Gastrostomy and jejunostomy, GIST, Colectomies , APR, Diversion Colostomy and Colostomy Reversal and Splenectomies, Hernia with mesh repairs, Haemorrhoidectomy, Fistula in Ano surgeries, Hydrocelectomy , Herinotomy & Herinoplasty, Circumcision (Adult and Paediatric), Varicose veins,Minimally Invasive Laparoscopy surgeries for various diseases like Gallstones, Appendicitis and Pseudo Cyst of Pancreas, etc. Most of the Urological procedures (TURPs, PCNL, Nephrectomies, Lithotripsies, stricture urethra management using Gamma knife, management for carcinomas of Penis, Bladder and Renal) have been done using minimally invasive method on a day care or short stay basis with remarkable success rates

AV fistula surgeries, IJV and femoral catheterisation and Permanent Catheterisation for Kidney disease patients requiring long term dialysis has been offered at the most affordable rate as an outpatient care by experienced Vascular Surgeons

Ability to detect various arterial and venous diseases at the earliest is being possible at our hospital due to the availability of CT Peripheral Angiogram and Doppler facility offered by the department of Radiology and MediScan at the most affordable cost and timely intervention by the Vascular Surgeons. Plastic and cosmetology procedures like reduction mammoplasty, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedures, liposuction, Gynecomastia surgeries, painless ear lobe repair, grafts and flaps have been regularly carried out.

Paediatric procedure -Circumcision, Hydrocele and Hernia repairs, Hypospadias correction surgeries and laparoscopic undescended testis correction surgeries have been a part of regular Paediatric surgeries performed by experienced Paediatric Surgeon.

Operation theatre staffs are well trained in both General Surgery and Super speciality cases both in elective and emergency situations. There are 6 well equipped operation theatres with C-Arm, laparoscopic equipment’s and intra op ultrasound.

Endoscopy and Colonoscopy procedures have been carried out by qualified Surgeons twice a week. Interventions like oesophageal banding, sclerotherapy for varices, H.Pylori detection and biopsies have also been carried out on a day care basis

Many outpatient procedures like aspiration of breast abscess, FNAC of breast lumps, thyroid and lymph nodes, Trucut Biopsies of Lymph nodes and breast lumps and Pigtail catheterisation for Liver Abscess, Retroperitoneal collection and Percutaneous Nephrostomy have been carried out almost every day. The above procedures have also been carried out with the help of MediScan- Department of Sonology whenever needed.

The hospital’s post-operative ward and ICU are well equipped with digital monitors, bed side x rays, ventilators, high flow oxygen device, etc along with well-trained staffs and round the clock duty Doctors

With the help of Rotary VHS Blood bank, we are always backed up with blood and blood products for all the emergency and elective cases

A large number of extra pulmonary tuberculosis including lymph nodal and Urological Tuberculosis have been detected timely and has been referred to REACH TB centre for Anti Tuberculosis therapy which is given free of cost.

Diabetic foot clinic runs every day. The department has incorporated the usage of a novel medical equipment “ILLUMINAT” which is a non-invasive method to know the type of bacteria on any given wound surface. Using the equipment it has become possible to start appropriate antibiotics at the earliest, thus enhancing the recovery rates

RAGAS Dental college and Sri Sairam Ayurveda Medical college students come to the department for their clinical postings.

Observership for Indian and International students from China, Ukraine and other countries has been carried out with sufficient exposure to all the General Surgery and Speciality procedures and patient care.
